Today, most devices are coming in standalone configuration (untethered), with the notable exception of Varjo XR-4. That being said, not all professional applications are compatible with the computing power available in the headset. This means rendering has to be done on a PC and streamed to the headset. There are many options to achieve that result: the PC itself can be local or in a Cloud server and the streaming can happen using a cable, wifi, or 5G. The tether, albeit less convenient, is still a valid option for some use cases. For instance, in some defense environments, security criteria just prohibit wireless, or in some crowded environments such as trade-shows, wifi is not performant enough.
